The Importance of Tummy Time
How a Few Minutes Each Day Can Help Your Baby Build a Strong Foundation for Life
When parents welcome a new baby into the world, they naturally focus on feeding, sleeping, and ensuring their little one is safe and comfortable. Yet one of the most beneficial activities for a baby's healthy development takes only a few minutes each day and requires no special equipment.
It's called tummy time.
Although it may seem like simple play, tummy time is one of the most important activities during a baby's first year. It helps strengthen muscles, supports healthy brain development, encourages movement, and prepares babies for many of the exciting milestones ahead, including rolling over, crawling, sitting, and eventually walking.
At Valemont Early Years, tummy time is a natural part of our infant programme because we understand that strong beginnings create confident learners.
What Is Tummy Time?
Tummy time simply means placing your baby on their stomach while they are awake and closely supervised.
Unlike sleeping, where babies should always be placed on their backs for safety, tummy time gives babies the opportunity to move against gravity and strengthen the muscles they need for everyday movement.
At first, many babies find tummy time challenging. That is perfectly normal.
Lifting their head even for a few seconds requires effort. With patience and regular practice, those few seconds gradually become minutes, and before long, babies begin pushing themselves up, rolling over, and exploring the world around them.
Why Is Tummy Time So Important?
Every time your baby spends time on their tummy, they are exercising dozens of muscles that support healthy development.
Their neck grows stronger as they lift their head to look around.
Their shoulders and arms begin supporting their body weight.
Their back and core muscles become more stable.
Their hands gradually learn to reach, grasp, and explore nearby objects.
These early movements create the foundation for almost every major physical milestone during infancy.
Without regular opportunities to practise these movements, some babies may take longer to develop the strength and coordination needed for crawling and other motor skills.
More Than Physical Development
The benefits of tummy time extend far beyond stronger muscles.
As babies lift their heads, they begin viewing the world from a completely different perspective. They notice colours, faces, sounds, toys, and movement in ways they cannot while lying on their backs.
This simple change encourages curiosity, visual tracking, problem-solving, and early cognitive development.
Babies are not just exercising their bodies—they are actively learning about their environment.
Preventing Flat Head Syndrome
Modern safe sleep recommendations encourage babies to sleep on their backs, which has dramatically reduced the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
However, spending long periods on their backs while awake can sometimes contribute to a flattened area on the back of the head, a condition known as positional plagiocephaly, often referred to as flat head syndrome.
Regular tummy time helps relieve this pressure by giving babies opportunities to rest on different parts of their body while strengthening the muscles that allow them to move independently.
When Should Tummy Time Begin?
Many parents are surprised to learn that tummy time can begin from the very first days after birth, provided the baby is healthy and awake.
During the newborn stage, tummy time may last only a minute or two at a time.
That is completely normal.
The goal is not to reach a certain number of minutes immediately but to make tummy time part of the baby's daily routine.
As your baby grows stronger, the length of each session naturally increases.
How Much Tummy Time Does My Baby Need?
Every baby develops at their own pace, but a gradual approach works best.
During the first few weeks, several short sessions throughout the day are often more effective than one long session.
By around three months of age, many babies comfortably enjoy approximately 30 to 60 minutes of tummy time spread across the day.
Remember that these minutes do not need to happen all at once. Several enjoyable sessions are often much more successful than trying to reach one long target.
Making Tummy Time Fun
The secret to successful tummy time is making it enjoyable.
Lie down on the floor facing your baby so they can see your smile.
Talk, sing, or read a story.
Place colourful toys just within reach to encourage reaching and exploration.
Use a soft play mat or blanket to create a comfortable space.
A baby-safe mirror can also be surprisingly fascinating, helping babies practise lifting their heads while discovering their own reflection.
Above all, remember that your encouragement is the most valuable toy your baby has.
What If My Baby Doesn't Like Tummy Time?
This is one of the most common concerns parents have.
Many babies initially fuss because tummy time requires effort. Imagine trying to perform your first push-up—it takes practice!
If your baby becomes frustrated, simply take a short break and try again later.
Even one or two minutes is beneficial.
The key is consistency rather than perfection.
Over time, as muscles become stronger, most babies begin enjoying tummy time much more.
Safety Always Comes First
While tummy time offers tremendous benefits, safety should always remain the priority.
Always ensure that:
- Your baby is awake.
- An adult is actively supervising.
- Tummy time takes place on a firm, safe surface.
- There are no pillows, loose blankets, or soft bedding nearby.
- Babies are never left unattended during tummy time.
Most importantly, babies should always be placed on their backs for sleep, even if they enjoy tummy time while awake.
